Evolution of a Painting

Re-working a painting

Each of my paintings goes through multiple transformations as the subject matter and the feelings they evoke come into play.  The process involves many layers of paint, and many weeks of working and re-working. The elements in the painting will evolve to tell a story.  I like to simplify the scenes as I work but also add new textures to enhance the story telling. The process is messy and exciting!

Figurative Works

My figurative work begins during my daily travels, using my sketch book to capture a subject and, without describing detail, depict what that subject is doing. The sketches become reference material for my studio paintings. With each sketch I think about what I find interesting about the scene and what I need to record quickly in order to use it for a painting. The goal of my sketches is to capture a gesture and the lights and darks in the figure. Sometimes I will re-use a sketched figure in multiple paintings.
